The Labour Party has renewed the mandate of Senator Nenadi Usman as the factional National Chairman, while Senator Darlington Nwokocha retains his position as the interim National Secretary, along with other appointed officials.

This decision empowers Senator Usman to continue leading the faction’s Interim National Working Committee (INWC).

The resolutions were reached during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the party, held on Friday in Abuja. The meeting was attended by statutory members of the NEC, the Board of Trustees (BoT), as well as key leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).

A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting was jointly signed by several party and labour leaders, including Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti; his Deputy, Ikechukwu Emetu; Chairman of the BoT, Chief S.O.Z Ejiofoh; Secretary of the BoT, Salisu Mohammed; NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero; NLC National Woman Leader, Comrade Deborah Yusuf; TUC Secretary General, Comrade Nuhu Toro; the National Chairman of the Interim Committee, Senator Nenadi Usman; the NLC General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja; President of the TUC, Comrade Engr. Festus Osifo; and Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Interim National Secretary.

In the communiqué, the NEC approved a comprehensive schedule for conducting party congresses across all levels, including Ward, Local Government Area, State, and Zonal Congresses, culminating in the National Convention.

The National Secretariat has been mandated to publish the guidelines and timelines necessary to ensure that these exercises are conducted in a transparent, credible, and democratic manner.

Furthermore, the NEC sanctioned the establishment of statutory committees tasked with supervising the nationwide Membership Revalidation and New Member Registration.

These committees are expected to collaborate with the National Secretariat, State Chairmen, and other relevant stakeholders to guarantee the credibility and inclusiveness of the membership drive. The National Secretariat is also directed to publish the list of the committee members.

The NEC also reviewed the Labour Party’s preparedness for the forthcoming Anambra State gubernatorial election, as well as other scheduled by-elections in senatorial districts and federal constituencies across the country.

It reaffirmed the party’s commitment to presenting credible candidates and directed the INWC to finalize all necessary preparations with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in strict adherence to the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.

Reiterating its dedication to internal democracy, adherence to the rule of law, and upholding the supremacy of the Labour Party Constitution, the NEC cautioned against the formation of any parallel structures or the pursuit of activities that contradict the party’s resolutions.

The NEC further called on all party stakeholders, members, and supporters to unite, shun divisive tendencies, and collectively work towards building a strong, people-centered, and ideologically-driven political movement capable of rescuing Nigeria from its challenges.

Lastly, the NEC appealed to INEC and all security agencies to carry out their statutory duties with impartiality and professionalism to guarantee free, fair, and credible outcomes in all upcoming elections.
