The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his thoughtful decision to immortalise the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. Alausa described the move as a significant honour, not just to the late leader but also to the nation’s education sector.

This commendation was contained in a statement released on Friday by the Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade, in Abuja.

President Tinubu had on Thursday announced that the University of Maiduguri, located in Borno State, would be renamed Muhammadu Buhari University of Maiduguri.

The president made this declaration during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) convened specifically to pay tribute to the former president, who recently passed away.

The FEC session, which brought together ministers and top government functionaries, was dedicated to reflecting on the life, leadership, and enduring contributions of the late President Buhari to Nigeria’s progress, unity, and governance.

In his address at the session, President Tinubu described the renaming of the University of Maiduguri as a fitting and symbolic gesture to honour Buhari’s legacy.

He highlighted that the late leader made significant strides in areas such as education, national security, and good governance, leaving behind a legacy that would continue to influence the nation’s trajectory.

Reacting to this development, Dr. Alausa expressed profound appreciation on behalf of the education sector, noting that the choice to honour Buhari through an academic institution was both symbolic and strategic.

According to him, it is a clear demonstration of President Tinubu’s deep respect, empathy, and unwavering belief in education as the cornerstone of national development.

“The Ministry of Education is deeply honoured that the education sector has been chosen as the channel through which the late President’s legacy will be permanently enshrined,” Alausa stated.

He further emphasised that the decision underscores the Tinubu administration’s recognition of education as a critical pillar for sustainable development and national identity.

Alausa praised the president’s commitment to human capital development, describing it as consistent with the ideals of national renewal and growth that Buhari himself championed during his lifetime.

Additionally, the Minister reiterated the Ministry’s dedication to upholding the enduring values of service, integrity, and excellence, which he said were embodied by both the late Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Tinubu.

Dr. Alausa assured that the education sector remains committed to building on this legacy by fostering policies and initiatives that will strengthen the nation’s educational institutions, thereby contributing to Nigeria’s overall socio-economic advancement.
