The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has emphasised the need to prioritise youth development as a strategy to tackle hardship, reduce criminality, and create jobs in Nigeria.
He expressed concern that the lack of viable pathways for self-improvement has pushed many youths into crime as a means of survival, perpetuating poverty and radicalisation.
Speaking at a press conference marking his 50th birthday in Oyo Town, Oba Owoade unveiled plans to establish a centre dedicated to digital skills training for young people
This initiative aims to equip youths with tools to participate in the global digital economy and reduce their involvement in cybercrime.
He explained that the centre was inspired by the growing interest of youths in technology and innovation, which, if properly harnessed, could propel Nigeria into economic prosperity.
The monarch stressed that quality education, vocational training, and skill development are critical in empowering the youth for meaningful productivity.
“A nation’s foundation lies in its educational system. Investing in education and skills ensures that youths are less vulnerable to criminal tendencies,” he stated.
Oba Owoade also advocated for entrepreneurship programmes, mentorship, and funding opportunities to foster a culture of innovation and self-sufficiency. According to him, creating employment opportunities and fostering social inclusion are essential to unlocking the vast potential of Nigeria’s youthful population.
He warned against the rising trend of cybercrimes, which he said results in financial losses, reputational damage, and erosion of public trust. The monarch recommended investment in cybersecurity skills to protect against data exploitation, surveillance, and identity fraud. This, he said, would enable individuals to use digital platforms confidently while safeguarding their privacy.
Highlighting the global shift driven by technological advancements, economic changes, and demographic trends, the Alaafin noted that Nigeria’s large youth population is a critical asset for innovation and competitiveness in the global marketplace.
He called for immediate and sustained action to equip young Nigerians with the education and skills necessary for employability and national development.
“It is a collective responsibility to invest in the youth to build a secure, inclusive, and prosperous nation that benefits all,” Oba Owoade concluded.
