Disney’s live-action remake of its beloved animated classic, “Lilo & Stitch,” has officially crossed the $1 billion milestone at the global box office, making it the first Hollywood film of 2025 to achieve this feat. This marks yet another major success for Disney, which continues to dominate the global film industry with its string of live-action adaptations and animated sequels.

The live-action adaptation, directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp, has been praised for blending nostalgia with modern storytelling, appealing to both older fans of the 2002 animated original and a new generation of viewers. According to industry reports, the film achieved the billion-dollar mark just over five weeks after its worldwide release, placing it alongside other recent Disney hits like “Moana 2,” “Inside Out 2,” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

Film analysts attribute the movie’s success to its family-friendly appeal, emotional storytelling, and stunning visual effects. The decision to retain much of the original story’s Hawaiian cultural essence while updating it with modern cinematic technology has been widely applauded.

The remake stars Maia Kealoha as Lilo and Zach Galifianakis as the lovable alien Stitch’s handler. Critics have particularly praised the CGI work on Stitch, describing it as “one of Disney’s most realistic live-action creature animations to date.”

Long-time fans of the original film have praised the remake for keeping its emotional core intact, including the famous line, “Ohana means family, and family means nobody gets left behind.”

Domestic (US & Canada): Over $430 million

International: More than $570 million, with significant contributions from Asian and European markets

Streaming Impact: Disney+ saw a 45% increase in subscriptions in regions where the film was released concurrently on streaming, further boosting its global success.

Critics have praised the film’s diverse casting, cultural representation, and family-centric themes, while fans have flooded social media with nostalgic posts comparing scenes from the live-action to the animated original. The hashtag #LiloAndStitchLiveAction trended worldwide for days after its release.

Following this massive success, Disney is reportedly planning more live-action adaptations of its animated classics, with “Tangled” and “The Princess and the Frog” rumored to be in development.
