Super Falcons forward Toni Payne has expressed complete satisfaction with her decision to play for Nigeria instead of the United States, describing it as one of the most fulfilling choices of her football career.

Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s crucial quarter-final clash against Zambia at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Casablanca, the Everton star reflected on her international switch with pride and conviction.

“Even though I grew up dreaming of playing for the U.S., when the opportunity to represent Nigeria came, it was an easy and unquestionable decision for me,” Payne said in an interview with Biola Solace-Chukwu.

“So, no regrets at all.”

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, to Nigerian parents, Payne rose through the ranks of the U.S. youth system, featuring for the U.S. U-17, U-20, and U-23 teams. Despite her early ties to American soccer, she made the switch to Nigeria in 2021 and has since become a key figure in the Super Falcons setup.

The 30-year-old forward emphasized that her decision was rooted in a desire to reconnect with her heritage and contribute to the growth of women’s football in Nigeria.

“I love being part of something bigger than myself,” she said.

“I love being around my culture—something I didn’t always experience growing up in the U.S. I’m proud to represent my family, and the passion and love for football here is something truly special.”

Since making her Super Falcons debut, Payne has brought creativity and technical quality to the Nigerian midfield, earning praise for her consistency and composure on the ball.

Her presence has been instrumental in Nigeria’s strong showing at the ongoing WAFCON, where the Falcons are aiming to reclaim the continental title and secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

As Nigeria prepares for a tough battle against Zambia, Payne remains focused on the team’s collective goals and hopes to inspire future generations of dual-heritage players to embrace their identity and proudly wear the green and white.
