The 2025 ITTF West Africa Regional Championships have served up electrifying action and compelling displays of skill and sportsmanship at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

Host nation Nigeria lived up to expectations, asserting dominance in Group 1 with commanding victories over Liberia and Ivory Coast.

The trio of Matthew Kuti, Taiwo Mati, and Abdulbasit Abdulfatai delivered flawless performances, ensuring Nigeria’s smooth progression to the knockout stage.

After receiving a walkover win against Liberia, the Nigerian men’s team returned to the table with purpose, defeating the Oba Oba Kizito-led Ivorian side 3-1 to secure a spot in the semifinals.

One of the standout highlights of the opening day came from Ivory Coast’s Audrey Diama and Eve Ndah. Although they fell short in the women’s team event, their spirited performance and technical promise were lauded by spectators and coaches alike, hinting at a promising future for the Ivorian women’s side.

Meanwhile, Group 2—which features Ghana, Togo, Guinea, and Benin Republic remains fiercely contested, with several fixtures still undecided as of press time.

The tournament kicked off on a colourful note, with a vibrant opening ceremony that featured a march-past and goodwill messages from dignitaries.

Vice President of ITTF Africa (West), Ferdinand Sonou, praised Nigeria and Lagos State for their outstanding hosting efforts.

“I would like to warmly thank the Nigerian authorities, the Lagos State authorities, and the entire organising committee for their tremendous effort and unwavering commitment to making this event a success,” he said.

President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, Ishaku Tikon—represented by Secretary General, Olusoji Akanmu—also expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its continuous support, reaffirming Nigeria’s leadership role in advancing the sport across West Africa.

With the tournament heating up, anticipation is building for the finals of the team event, scheduled for Thursday, July 17.
