The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an extension of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Anambra State, following growing appeals from residents for more time to register.
In an official statement released on Thursday, July 17, 2025, Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, explained that the extension became necessary to accommodate the impressive turnout of registrants across the state.
Initially scheduled to conclude on Thursday, July 17, the exercise will now continue for an additional three days, ending on Sunday, July 20, 2025.
Providing an update on the exercise, the Commission revealed that, as of Wednesday, July 16, 2025, a total of 96,085 new voters had been successfully registered in just nine days, averaging over 10,600 registrations daily. INEC commended the peaceful and orderly conduct of the exercise in all 326 registration centres across the state.
Beyond new registrations, INEC also recorded 12,595 applications for transfers of registration, both within and outside Anambra State. Furthermore, 7,061 individuals applied for updates to their personal records or sought replacements for lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
The Commission assured the public of its continued commitment to transparency and inclusiveness. It pledged to keep citizens informed of all developments and next steps in the electoral process.
According to the statement, “Thereafter, the Commission will display the register for claims and objections by citizens, as mandated by law, followed by a further clean-up of the data through the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).”
Additionally, INEC disclosed that at this preliminary stage of the CVR, 56,017 (58%) of newly registered voters are female, while 50,429 (52.48%) are young people between the ages of 18 and 34. The Commission promised that a comprehensive breakdown of the registrants based on age, gender, occupation, and disability status will be published for public knowledge.
Meanwhile, INEC has also received five more letters of intent from various associations seeking registration as political parties, bringing the total number of applications so far to 134.
The Commission stated that details of these new associations — including their proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leadership — have been published on its official website and other public platforms.
INEC reiterated its readiness for the forthcoming off-cycle governorship election in Anambra State and reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring a transparent and credible electoral process.
