Coalitions Won’t Shake PDP — Governor Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dismissing any suggestion that emerging political coalitions, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alliance, pose a threat to the party’s stability or relevance.

Speaking on Wednesday during an interaction with journalists at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State — the venue of a colloquium commemorating the 10th coronation anniversary of the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi — Makinde asserted that the PDP remains a resilient institution, unshaken by political realignments.

“Politics is a game of interest,” he said. “I don’t see the ADC coalition making any dent on the PDP. The PDP is an institution that guarantees freedom of association — people are free to join and also free to leave.

“If anyone feels dissatisfied, it is better they leave rather than remain and cause disunity within the party.”

Makinde further emphasized that political movements and coalitions are natural elements of democracy, but they neither intimidate nor concern him.

“Players will always come and go — governors will come and go, presidents will come and go — but our states and the country will remain. What matters is the stability and progress of our nation, not the fleeting ambitions of individuals,” he added.

Additionally, Makinde had earlier reinforced his stance during the Southwest PDP Caucus meeting held last week. He reiterated his loyalty to the PDP and rejected any idea that new political alliances could destabilize the party’s prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He assured party stakeholders and supporters that the PDP remains strong and cohesive in the Southwest region, fully prepared to confront any political challenge that may arise.

He challenged the credibility of those forming new coalitions, casting doubt on their intentions and ideological consistency.

“Who exactly are these people coming together to form a coalition?” he queried. “Many of them are known for switching allegiances — from the PDP to the APC and then back again. Have they truly changed? Have they repented? What fresh ideas are they even offering?”

Drawing a vivid analogy to illustrate his steadfastness, Makinde declared, “This very building we are gathered in belongs to the PDP in the Southwest. If we discover that the roof is leaking, do we abandon the building and run elsewhere? No.

“A responsible leader stays back, fixes the problem, and strengthens the structure. That is the essence of responsible leadership — standing firm and prioritizing the welfare of the people.”

Governor Makinde made it clear that no amount of coalition-building or political scheming would shake his dedication to the PDP or alter his focus on delivering good governance within Oyo State and the broader Southwest region.
