President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that the University of Maiduguri will henceforth be renamed Muhammadu Buhari University in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Late President Muhammadu Buhari

President Tinubu made this declaration during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) convened to pay tributes to his predecessor, who recently passed away.

The session, attended by ministers and other top government officials, was dedicated to reflecting on the life, leadership, and contributions of the late former president to Nigeria’s development and unity.

In his remarks, President Tinubu described the decision to rename the institution as a fitting tribute to a leader whose legacy, he said, had a profound impact on education, national security, and governance.

According to him, Buhari’s commitment to advancing the educational sector and addressing the insurgency in the North-East region made the University of Maiduguri a symbolic choice for this honour.

The President noted that Buhari’s leadership during a critical time in Nigeria’s history helped to preserve the nation’s integrity and stability.

He added that immortalising him through the renaming of the university was not only to commemorate his efforts but also to inspire future generations to serve the country with dedication and patriotism.

The announcement was met with commendation from members of the Federal Executive Council, many of whom praised the late Buhari’s unwavering service to the nation and his deep-rooted passion for the educational advancement of the North-East and Nigeria at large.

The renaming of the university is expected to be formalised with appropriate legislative and administrative processes in the coming weeks.
