Team Nigeria’s women’s table tennis squad began their campaign at the 2025 ITTF Africa West Regional Championship in dominant fashion, securing a resounding 3-0 victory over Benin Republic in the final of the women’s team event.

The match, which took place at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Sports Hall inside Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, marked an emphatic start for the hosts on the opening day of the prestigious regional tournament.

Led by US-based star Ajoke Ojomu, the Nigerian side showcased their quality and depth to clinch the regional title, while also securing qualification for the 2025 African Championships set to be held in Rwanda later this year.

This victory comes as part of a larger series of events, as the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall is scheduled to host five elite international table tennis competitions this year, further cementing Lagos’ status as a hub for the sport in Africa.

Speaking after the match, Ojomu commended the Benin Republic team for their fighting spirit, noting their steady rise as one of the top women’s teams in the region.

“We are happy, the team is happy. Benin is one of the toughest sides in the region, especially in the women’s category. They played really well, and we’re proud to come out on top,” she said.

With their ticket to Rwanda now secured, Ojomu also turned her focus to the upcoming WTT Contender Lagos, one of the key events in the global table tennis calendar, scheduled to run from July 22 to 26.

“We’ve secured qualification for the African Championship, but I’ll also be competing in the World Table Tennis Contender event here in Lagos. It’s an exciting time, and I’m really looking forward to it,” she told reporters.

The Nigerian women’s team is expected to continue their campaign in the singles and doubles events of the regional championship over the coming days, with hopes of adding more medals to their tally and building momentum ahead of continental and global competitions.
