Reigning Premier League champions Liverpool have stepped up their pursuit of a new centre forward, identifying Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak as a top target amid growing doubts over the future of Darwin Núñez.

With Napoli and other European clubs reportedly circling Núñez, the Reds are preparing for a potential attacking reshuffle and have approached Newcastle to inquire about the availability of Isak. While no formal bid has yet been made, the Merseyside club’s interest is understood to be serious.

“Liverpool have not submitted a formal offer for Isak, however they have made an approach to Newcastle to assess his availability,” a source close to the negotiations disclosed.

Newcastle Stand Firm on Star Striker

Despite Liverpool’s inquiry, Newcastle remain adamant that Isak is not for sale. The 24-year-old Swedish striker has become a cornerstone of Eddie Howe’s side, netting 62 goals in 102 appearances, including a stunning effort in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool last season.

Any potential deal would come at a massive cost. Sources suggest that Newcastle would demand a fee exceeding the £116 million Liverpool paid for Florian Wirtz earlier this summer—currently the most expensive transfer in British football history.

Núñez Attracting Interest

The increased focus on Isak comes amid uncertainty surrounding Darwin Núñez’s future at Anfield. The Uruguay international has struggled to cement his place as a consistent starter, and Napoli are said to be among the clubs closely monitoring his situation.

Liverpool’s forward line could be set for further changes, with the club rejecting a €67.5m (£58.6m) bid from Bayern Munich for winger Luis Díaz earlier this week. The decision signals the Reds’ intention to retain key attackers unless top-tier replacements are secured.

Newcastle Pursuing Ekitike — But Not as Isak’s Replacement

In a related development, Newcastle are working on a deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, with the aim of partnering him with Isak, not replacing him.

“Newcastle are working on a deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, with a view to the forward playing alongside Isak in attack,” the source added.

Liverpool have also been linked with Ekitike, but sources indicate that the Anfield hierarchy are not fully convinced by the 23-year-old’s profile at this stage.
