The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), scheduled to hold on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, has been postponed in Kwara and Oyo States as part of efforts to honour Nigeria’s late former President, Muhammadu Buhari.
This development follows the public holiday declared by the Federal Government to mourn the passing of President Buhari, who died recently at the age of 82.
The education ministries of both states announced the deferment in separate statements released on Tuesday.
In Kwara State, the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development rescheduled the examination to Thursday, July 17, 2025. The ministry’s Press Secretary, Peter Amogbonjaye, explained that the decision was in response to the federal directive for a public holiday.
According to the statement: “This postponement is due to the public holiday earlier declared by the Federal Government in honour of the late former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR. The ministry regrets any inconvenience this change may cause and appreciates the continued cooperation and understanding of all stakeholders.”
Meanwhile, in Oyo State, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology announced an indefinite postponement of the affected BECE subjects — Mathematics and Pre-Vocational Studies. The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Olusegun Olayiwola, stated in Ibadan that the postponement aligns with the national mourning period declared for the late leader.
Olayiwola urged students, parents, and schools to take note of the changes. He assured that all other examination papers scheduled from Wednesday, July 16, 2025, would proceed as earlier planned.
Both states expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during this period of national loss.
The late former President Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after a prolonged illness. His death occurred in a London hospital, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
Following his demise, the Federal Government declared a period of national mourning, including public holidays, to honour his memory and legacy as a former Head of State and two-term democratically elected President of the country.
Buhari was laid to rest on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites. The burial ceremony was attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, prominent political figures, world leaders, traditional rulers, family members, and thousands of sympathizers from across the country and beyond.
