The shocking deaths of two students at the Government Boarding Secondary School, Bichi, have prompted the Kano State Government to launch a full-scale investigation into the tragic incident that occurred within the school premises.

The deceased students, Hamza Idris Tofawa and Umar Yusuf Dungurawa, were reportedly assaulted by a group of senior students who used dangerous improvised metal objects known locally as ‘Gwale-Gwale’.

It was gathered that the assailants accused the victims of committing an undisclosed offence and decided to punish them, leading to their untimely deaths.

The disturbing event was confirmed in a statement released on Tuesday, July 16, 2025, by Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru, the Director of Public Enlightenment at the Kano State Ministry of Education. The statement assured the public that the government would leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth behind the killings.

According to the statement, the Kano State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, through the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Bashir Baffa Muhammad, has ordered an immediate and transparent investigation into the matter.

Muhammad, who visited the school following the incident, urged students to refrain from taking laws into their own hands. He advised that any grievances or suspicions should always be reported to school authorities for proper resolution.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray that Almighty Allah grants the departed souls eternal peace in Jannatul Firdaus,” the Permanent Secretary stated.

Meanwhile, the families of the deceased have made passionate appeals for justice. Malam Ibrahim Yusuf Dungurawa, a relative of the late Umar Yusuf, described how the family was devastated by the loss and implored the government to ensure justice is served.

Similarly, Malam Idris Garba Tofawa, father of the late Hamza Idris, while accepting the loss as a divine trial, called on the authorities to act decisively in addressing the case and ensuring accountability.
