Former Nigerian international and celebrated coach Kadiri Ikhana has reassured Nigerians that his health is improving as he continues to receive treatment for an undisclosed ailment at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Edo State.
Ikhana, a national icon and 1980 AFCON winner, made the assurance in a telephone conversation with former teammate and fellow legend, Dr. Segun Odegbami, on Wednesday morning.
“At 6:30 this morning, my ringing phone woke me up. On the other end was the unmistakeable voice of Kadiri Ikhana, MON,” Odegbami recounted.
“We spoke for about five minutes. Still straining to speak clearly, Kadiri said he is healing. He remains at the hospital in Irrua but is receiving proper treatment and wanted me to personally thank all Nigerians for their prayers, support, and concern.”
Ikhana acknowledged that his recovery has been aided by the swift intervention of family members and a number of well-meaning Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora.
Odegbami expressed gratitude on Ikhana’s behalf to all those who have reached out and offered assistance during this challenging period.
“On his behalf and on behalf of his children, who have been actively supporting him from abroad, I thank the many Nigerians who reached out with offers of help — once the full medical needs became clearer,” he said.
Among those commended for their gestures of solidarity were:
The Chairman of Air Peace, The Governor of Kwara State, The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), The Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, and The Governor of Edo State, who reportedly sent a delegation to visit Ikhana and offered to cover the full cost of his medical treatment.
Odegbami also paid special tribute to Hon. Austin Braimoh, whose unwavering support and personal friendship with Ikhana have been “most helpful and deeply appreciated.”
Ikhana, 72, is one of the most respected figures in Nigerian football history. In addition to his playing days with the Green Eagles, he famously led Enyimba FC to their historic CAF Champions League triumph in 2003, the first for any Nigerian club.
As he continues his recovery, tributes and goodwill messages have continued to pour in from across the football community and the wider public, all united in hope that one of Nigeria’s greatest football sons will soon return to full strength.
