The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) is brimming with optimism as the third Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U-18 and U-20 Championships begin today Wednesday, 16th July in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Nigeria, the host nation, will compete with a 92-athlete contingent comprising 51 male and 41 female athletes, as over 40 African countries converge on Abeokuta for the prestigious youth athletics event.

A detailed breakdown of the team shows:

U-18 category: 23 boys and 17 girls

U-20 category: 29 boys and 23 girls

The Nigerian squad moved into the championship village on Monday following a two-week intensive training camp, which was held immediately after the national trials in Sagamu, Ogun State.

AFN Technical Director, Gabriel Okon, explained that the selection process was rigorous and strategic.

“The technical committee critically assessed each athlete’s strength, tactical skills, and the events where Nigeria has a competitive advantage. I’m confident this team will go far — they are the future of Nigerian athletics. They’re young, eager to learn, and the spirit in camp is sky-high,” Okon said.

AFN President, Tonobok Okowa, also charged the athletes to aim high and compete with integrity and passion.

“It’s not about winning at all costs. They should run, jump, and throw with determination and pride. We are fully committed to building a solid foundation for the future,” Okowa stated.

“We went to Ndola, Zambia two years ago with 41 athletes and still finished on the podium. This time, with a larger and stronger team, we are aiming for the top honour.”

The AFN also announced the team captains for the championship — Temitope Ademola will captain the girls’ team, while Honourable Clement will lead the boys.

The championship marks a major highlight for Nigerian athletics in 2025, offering a platform to showcase and groom the next generation of stars on home soil.
