The eight teams that have secured promotion from the Nationwide League One (NLO) to the Nigeria National League (NNL) for the upcoming season have now been officially confirmed.

Following the conclusion of the highly competitive NLO promotion playoffs, which were held across various centres in Nigeria, four teams each from the Northern and Southern conferences earned their places in the second tier of Nigerian football.

These teams overcame stiff opposition during the playoffs and are now set to compete in the NNL, where they will face more experienced sides and strive to earn promotion to the top-flight Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Promoted NLO Teams (2024/2025 Season)

Northern Conference

Kano Ambassadors – Kano State, Warinje FC – Bauchi State, City FC – Abuja (FCT) and Mai Kunkele Utd —Niger State

Southern Conference

Stormers SC – Ogun State, Hammola FC – Osun State, E-World United – Cross River State and Ikorodu City FA – Lagos State

These eight clubs have shown impressive quality and resilience throughout the season, culminating in their successful playoff campaigns. Their promotion marks a significant step forward in their development, and the 2025/26 NNL season promises to be even more competitive with their addition.

Football stakeholders across the country have lauded the NLO for its continued role in unearthing and promoting grassroots talent, with many players from the league going on to feature at the national and international levels.

Significance of the Promotion

The NLO, Nigeria’s third-tier league, continues to play a crucial role in talent discovery and grassroots football development. With over 200 clubs nationwide, only eight teams are promoted each season—making this a highly competitive and prestigious achievement.

For the promoted teams, the jump to the NNL means:

Increased media visibility Greater financial demands and operational expectations Opportunities to attract sponsors and commercial partners A chance to compete for promotion to the elite Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL)

Promotion also brings logistical challenges, including national travel, facility upgrades, and compliance with league licensing standards—but it’s a chance for these clubs to grow both on and off the pitch.

As preparations begin for the new NNL season, the promoted teams will now focus on squad strengthening, infrastructure development, and strategic planning to ensure they can hold their own in one of Africa’s most competitive second-tier leagues.
