Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in London on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Shettima was accompanied by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Both officials were dispatched to the United Kingdom as part of Nigeria’s official arrangements to retrieve the late President’s remains and facilitate his return to the country.

Upon arrival in London, Vice President Shettima was received by the Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Zulum, alongside the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, who were already in the UK to support the necessary diplomatic and logistical processes.

The Buhari family had earlier confirmed the former President’s death, revealing that he passed away at approximately 4:30 pm yesterday at a private clinic in London, after battling a prolonged but undisclosed illness. He was aged 82.

However, Nigerian activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that the former president succumbed to blood cancer, specifically leukemia. Citing insider sources, Sowore further claimed that Buhari underwent stem cell therapy in the United Kingdom during the initial stages of his illness.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu formally announced Buhari’s death, expressing deep sorrow over the nation’s loss. In a personal gesture of sympathy, he spoke directly with the former First Lady, Mrs. Aishat Buhari, to extend his condolences and offer comfort to the grieving family.

In a mark of national mourning, President Tinubu has ordered that all national flags be flown at half-mast across the country. This solemn tribute is intended to honour the life, service, and contributions of the late President to Nigeria.

Additionally, President Tinubu tasked Vice President Shettima with the responsibility of accompanying Buhari’s body back to Nigeria. The government has announced that full state protocols will be observed, and appropriate burial arrangements are being put in place to ensure the former leader is laid to rest with the dignity befitting his status.
