The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on behalf of the Federal Government, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
The holiday is in furtherance of the seven days of national mourning earlier declared by President Tinubu in memory of the late statesman.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo explained that the public holiday is a mark of respect and recognition of Buhari’s service, sacrifice, and immense contributions to the nation’s democratic journey, governance, and development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation.
This public holiday offers Nigerians a moment to reflect on his impactful leadership, the principles he embodied, and the vision he held for a stronger Nigeria,” the Minister stated.
He further called on all citizens to use the day not only to remember the former President but also to promote peace, unity, patriotism, and national cohesion—values Buhari consistently championed throughout his public service career.
Additionally, the Federal Government reminded the public that the national flag is to be flown at half-mast nationwide throughout the seven-day mourning period, which commenced on Sunday, July 13, 2025, as a symbol of collective grief and respect.
The government also expressed heartfelt condolences to the late President’s family, the government and people of Katsina State, as well as to all Nigerians mourning the passing of a leader who played a significant role in the nation’s history. Prayers were also offered for the peaceful repose of his soul.
The statement was signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Interior, and dated July 14, 2025.
