Veteran journalist and respected media practitioner, Yomi Odunuga, has been officially appointed as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.

The confirmation of his appointment was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by Terrence Kuanum, the Special Adviser on Public Affairs in the SGF’s office. Kuanum stated that the appointment, which was approved on Thursday, July 10, 2025, has since taken effect, with Odunuga already discharging his official duties.

In line with the Public Service Rules, Odunuga has commenced the requisite documentation process to formalise his integration into the SGF’s team. The SGF’s office made this clarification in response to speculations in some media circles questioning the legitimacy of his appointment.

“The public is urged to disregard such unfounded reports,” Kuanum stated, emphasizing that the appointment followed due process and received appropriate authorization. He reiterated the SGF’s office commitment to transparency, due diligence, and professionalism in all its engagements and appointments.

Kuanum also revealed that Odunuga, on the very day of his appointment, issued an official statement debunking rumours that had linked the SGF, Senator Akume, to aspirations for the national chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This prompt action, he noted, underscores Odunuga’s readiness to protect the integrity of the SGF’s office.

Senator Akume expressed strong confidence in Odunuga’s ability to project and manage the public image of his office, describing him as an experienced journalist with an admirable professional track record.

He noted that Odunuga’s vast expertise in political reporting and media relations would be instrumental in advancing the communication objectives of the SGF’s office.

Before this appointment, Yomi Odunuga served as an Associate Editor at The Nation newspaper. He is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s foremost political editors and columnists, with a distinguished career that spans decades in journalism and public affairs commentary.

The SGF’s office concluded by reaffirming its dedication to upholding the highest standards of credibility, professionalism, and accountability in its operations and official appointments.
