Nigeria’s Super Falcons have secured $200,000 in prize money following their hard-fought 1-0 win over Botswana on Thursday night in Casablanca at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The victory, powered by a late strike, confirmed Nigeria’s place in the quarterfinals, making them the first team to reach the last eight with a game to spare. The result also positions the Super Falcons as the only team so far with consecutive wins in the group stage.

By the prevailing exchange rate, the Super Falcons’ current earnings amount to approximately ₦305 million.

CAF’s Boosted Prize Structure

The $200,000 guaranteed to each quarterfinalist is part of the enhanced prize package introduced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to incentivize performance and elevate the status of women’s football on the continent.

According to the new prize breakdown:

Quarter-finalists are guaranteed $200,000 Semi-finalists finishing third will receive $350,000 Runners-up in the final will take home $500,000 The champions will earn a record-breaking $1 million

CAF’s financial uplift marks a significant improvement from previous editions and reflects its growing commitment to supporting the women’s game.

Eyes on the Grand Prize

As nine-time continental champions, the Super Falcons are not just chasing another title—they’re also in pole position to capture the tournament’s top prize. Three more wins would see them walk away with $1 million, the highest payout in WAFCON history.

Victory in Morocco would further cement Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football while providing a massive financial boost for the sport back home. The funding could enhance player welfare, invest in grassroots development, and improve infrastructure for future generations of female footballers.

Other Teams Also Benefit

CAF’s restructured reward model ensures all participating teams receive financial compensation:

Third-place teams in each group will earn $150,000 Bottom-placed teams are guaranteed $125,000

This structure is designed to make the competition financially rewarding for all, while also increasing competitiveness and motivation throughout the group stage.

Next Up: Algeria

The Super Falcons will wrap up their Group B campaign on Sunday, July 13, against Algeria, aiming to maintain their perfect record and build momentum heading into the knockout phase.

With a minimum of $200,000 already secured and the potential for significantly more, Nigeria’s journey through WAFCON 2024 promises to be as rewarding financially as it is sportingly.
