Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has described his team as a “work in progress” despite securing a late 1–0 win over Botswana in their second group match at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Nigeria needed a late strike from Chinwendu Ihezuo in the 87th minute to edge past a resilient Botswana side in a match that tested the Falcons’ patience and persistence.

Speaking during the post-match press conference, Madugu praised his team’s fighting spirit but admitted that there is still plenty of room for improvement as the tournament progresses.

“It’s always a work in progress. Even if we score 10 goals, there will still be things to work on,” Madugu said. “We’re not yet at our peak, and that’s okay. What matters now is improving game by game.”

Squad Rotation Ahead of Algeria Clash

Madugu also hinted at making tactical changes for Nigeria’s final Group B game against Algeria on Sunday, July 13, stressing the importance of squad rotation to manage player workload.

“It’s not about underestimating the opposition. All our players are capable and deserve a chance. But we must be smart—this tournament can involve up to six games. We need to keep the squad fresh, avoid fatigue, and prepare for the long haul,” he explained.

The coach noted that changes would help maintain balance and ensure competitiveness within the squad as the Super Falcons aim to top the group and advance deep into the knockout stages.

Abiodun Suspended for Final Group Match

Madugu also addressed the absence of midfielder Deborah Abiodun, who is suspended for the Algeria game after receiving two yellow cards in the tournament so far.

“We’re aware of her suspension, and while we’ll miss her quality in midfield, it’s also an opportunity for others to step up,” Madugu said. “You can’t become champions without overcoming challenges. It’s part of the process and a test of our squad depth.”

Abiodun has been a key presence in the middle of the park for Nigeria, and her absence will force a reshuffle in midfield, potentially offering minutes to less-utilized players.

Super Falcons Aim for Group B Dominance

With six points from two games, Nigeria have already secured a spot in the quarterfinals but will aim to finish as Group B leaders when they face Algeria. A win or draw would guarantee top position, while a loss could open the door for Tunisia or Botswana to overtake them, depending on results.

The Super Falcons are chasing their record-extending 10th WAFCON title, having last lifted the trophy in 2018. Under the guidance of Madugu, who took over as interim coach following the departure of Randy Waldrum, the team is looking to blend experience with youth and return to the summit of African women’s football.
