The latest FIFA World Rankings released on Thursday, July 11, 2025 show Nigeria’s Super Eagles ranked 44th in the world, maintaining their spot among the top five teams in Africa.

The three-time African champions accumulated 1,484.26 points, keeping them in the global top 50 as they continue their quest for a return to the summit of African football. This marks a slight improvement in global positioning following recent international performances.

Africa’s Top 10: Morocco Lead the Pack

Nigeria remain 5th in Africa, trailing:

Morocco – Africa’s highest-ranked nation and 12th globally

Senegal – The 2021 AFCON winners

Egypt – Seven-time African champions

Algeria – Former continental champions

Nigeria – Fifth on the continent

Ivory Coast – Reigning AFCON 2023 champions drop to sixth in Africa

Tunisia, Cameroon, Mali and South Africa complete African top ten.

Notably, Ivory Coast, fresh from their AFCON triumph on home soil earlier this year, slipped one spot to sixth in Africa—a sign of fluctuating form following the continental showpiece.

World Rankings: Argentina Retain Top Spot

Globally, Argentina remain world number one, followed by reigning European champions Spain, with France, England and Brazil rounding out the top five. Meanwhile, 2025 UEFA Nations League winners Portugal sit in 6th position, while Morroco top-ranked team in Africa , are 12th in the World.

Nigeria Eye World Cup Qualifier Boost

The Super Eagles will be aiming to improve their ranking further when the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers resume in September. Nigeria currently sit fourth in their qualifying group C after a pair of draws in their opening fixtures against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in November 2023, followed by a draw at home to South Africa and a loss against Benin Republic in June, 2024.

The eagles recorded their first win of the qualifiers in the match-day 5 with a 2-0 victory against the Amavubi of Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on the 21st March 2025, before recording another stalemate at home against Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo four days later.

With return leg fixtures against Rwanda and South Africa on the horizon, the September international window presents a crucial opportunity for the super eagles to earn vital points and climb the rankings before the next update.

The next FIFA rankings are scheduled to be published on Wednesday, September 18, 2025.
