The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has unequivocally denied any involvement in the ongoing race for the position of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing such speculation as unfounded and misleading.

In a statement released through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Yomi Odunuga, Senator Akume addressed recent media reports suggesting that he is one of the contenders vying for the party’s top leadership role.

He firmly dismissed the claims, labeling them as distractions from his current responsibilities in the federal government.

“I am not in any race for the APC chairmanship, nor am I seeking any internal party position,” Akume stated.

“My attention and energy are fully dedicated to executing the responsibilities entrusted to me by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It is imperative that I remain focused on supporting the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Odunuga further clarified that while Senator Akume acknowledges that there are credible and qualified individuals from the North-Central region who may be considered for the national chairmanship—should the party decide to zone the office to the region—he remains committed to national service over partisan ambitions.

Quoting Akume, Odunuga added: “I am not in a hurry to abandon the critical duties assigned to me. I believe strongly that whatever is meant for me will manifest in its own time. I cannot be part of a race I have no interest in joining.”

He emphasized that his achievements in public life have always been made possible through divine grace and the support of well-meaning individuals, including President Tinubu. Therefore, any insinuation linking him to the party leadership contest is entirely baseless.

“My focus remains steadfast: to help implement the Renewed Hope Agenda and ensure that Nigerians reap the true dividends of democracy. Under President Tinubu’s leadership, we are working tirelessly to deliver on our promises to the people. That is the mission that drives me,” Akume affirmed.
