Tragedy struck in the Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State on Tuesday morning, July 8, 2025, when a commercial truck crushed three junior secondary school students of Prospect High School and a commercial motorcyclist, killing them instantly.

The fatal accident occurred along the Abanla–Idi-Ayunre road as the students were on their way to school. According to eyewitnesses, the incident unfolded when the truck driver, in a reckless attempt to overtake another vehicle, lost control and rammed into a motorcycle carrying the three students.

Two of the students and the motorcycle rider died on the spot. The third student, who was critically injured, was rushed to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to injuries, eyewitnesses confirmed.

“The truck fatally crushed all of them in one blow,” said a distraught onlooker. “The motorcyclist and the children didn’t stand a chance.” Another witness added that the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the incident, abandoning the vehicle.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, chaos erupted as grieving students and residents took to the streets in protest. Many blocked the busy road, demanding urgent government action to curb the rising menace of heavy-duty vehicles in residential areas.

Commercial motorcyclists and community members joined in solidarity, decrying what they described as recurring and preventable carnage.

Reacting swiftly, the Chairman of Oluyole Local Government, Hon. Akeem Olatunji, visited the scene and confirmed the incident.

He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of young lives and condemned the reckless driving culture among both truck operators and commercial motorcyclists.

“This is one tragedy too many,” Olatunji said solemnly. “As a father, I can only imagine the pain these parents are going through. It is heartbreaking and unacceptable that we continue to lose our children in such avoidable circumstances.”

He stressed that traffic violations—such as overloading motorcycles and overspeeding—must stop, adding that had the rider adhered to safety rules, the outcome might have been different.

Olatunji assured the affected families that justice would be pursued without compromise. He vowed that no effort would be spared in locating the absconded truck driver and ensuring he is prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

In response to the growing safety concerns, the council chairman ordered the immediate construction of speed bumps along the Abanla–Idi-Ayunre road.

“We must take decisive measures to slow down these trailers and protect our people, especially vulnerable children who use this road daily,” he said.

The tragic event has reignited conversations about road safety and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations across the state.

Many residents are now calling for designated truck routes and enhanced pedestrian protections, particularly near schools and densely populated areas.
