The Nasarawa State Government has commenced the free distribution of fertilisers to 73,500 farmers across the state as part of its ongoing efforts to boost food production and strengthen food security.

This was disclosed by Mr. Peter Ahemba, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to Governor Abdullahi Sule, during a press conference held on Tuesday in Lafia, the state capital.

According to Ahemba, a total of 500 farmers from each of the 147 electoral wards in the state will benefit from the fertiliser distribution. Additionally, the chairmen of the 13 local government areas have each received 100 bags of fertiliser to be used on local government-managed farms.

He stated that this initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope food security agenda and reflects the Sule administration’s broader commitment to revitalising the agricultural sector in Nasarawa State.

As part of this commitment, Ahemba revealed that the state government has cultivated 3,500 hectares of rice on its state-owned farm located in Jangwa, Awe Local Government Area.

This comes after the government acquired 10,000 hectares of farmland in the same area in 2024, of which 2,000 hectares were used for rice cultivation last year.

Highlighting the government’s long-term agricultural goals, Ahemba reaffirmed that Nasarawa State remains dedicated to creating an enabling environment for investment in agriculture.

This includes the timely provision of modern farm inputs and equipment to enhance farmers’ productivity.

In addition to its agricultural interventions, the state government is also prioritising rural infrastructure development. Ahemba announced that plans have been finalised to construct rural access roads to connect farming communities to urban centres.

“These rural roads are crucial to Governor Sule’s vision of opening up remote areas, making it easier for farmers to transport their produce to markets without difficulties,” he added.

The initiatives form part of a broader strategy by the Nasarawa State Government to transform the agricultural sector, improve rural livelihoods, and ensure sustainable food supply across the state and beyond.
