Lagos State University (LASU) has been officially ranked as the most preferred university in Nigeria, according to fresh statistics released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The announcement was made on Tuesday during the 2024 JAMB Policy Meeting held in Abuja. The data revealed a significant shift in candidate preference, with LASU surpassing the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), which had consistently occupied the top position in recent years.

Following LASU on the preference list is the University of Lagos (UNILAG), which secured the second position with a total of 58,645 applicants. Meanwhile, UNILORIN, once the most sought-after institution in the country, dropped to third place, attracting 56,758 candidates this year.

UNILORIN had long enjoyed popularity among candidates sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), a reputation largely built on its stable academic calendar and minimal record of academic disruptions, especially those caused by strikes.

These characteristics had given the institution a competitive edge over many other public universities in Nigeria, making it a top choice for students seeking uninterrupted and quality higher education.

However, LASU’s recent rise to the top suggests shifting preferences among prospective students, possibly influenced by the institution’s improved academic reputation, infrastructure, and expanding programme offerings.
