Billionaire Elon Musk has launched a new political party in the United States, dubbed the “America Party“, following a dramatic fallout with President Donald Trump over the “One Big Beautiful Bill”. The party’s formation is aimed at challenging the nation’s “one-party system” and giving back freedom to the American people.

Musk announced the party’s launch on Saturday, July 5, 2025, via a post on X, citing a poll he conducted on Independence Day, which garnered over 1.2 million responses.

The poll asked whether respondents wanted “independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system” that has dominated US politics for centuries. With nearly two-thirds voting in favor of a new party, Musk declared, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!”

Musk’s decision to launch the America Party stems from his disagreement with Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill”, which he believes will bankrupt the US by adding $3.4 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade.

Musk had previously threatened to start a new political party and spend money to unseat lawmakers who supported the bill. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” Musk stated.

The new party’s impact on the 2026 midterm elections and the presidential vote in 2028 remains uncertain. Musk outlined a possible strategy, focusing on targeting 2-3 Senate seats and 8-10 House districts to become the deciding vote on key legislation. However, experts warn that breaking the Republican-Democratic duopoly will be challenging, given its dominance in US politics for over 160 years.

President Trump responded to Musk’s announcement by threatening to cut off federal subsidies to Musk’s companies and potentially revoke his citizenship. “We’ll have to take a look,” Trump told reporters when asked if he would consider deporting Musk, who has held US citizenship since 2002.

Musk envisions the America Party as a “people-first alternative to the establishment”, focusing on restoring freedom, innovation, and American leadership. While details about the party’s platform are sparse, Musk emphasized that it will prioritize fiscal responsibility and innovation.
