Tragedy struck on Sunday in the Badagry area of Lagos State when a horrific road accident at Atura Bus Stop claimed the lives of at least eight individuals.

The incident involved a commercial passenger bus and a heavy-duty truck, leaving several families in mourning and a community reeling from the shock.

According to a statement released by Adebayo Taofiq, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the crash occurred when a 16-seater Mazda commercial bus, bearing registration number KJA 811 YF, collided forcefully with a DAF truck marked T1 4636 LA.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver of the bus lost control of the vehicle while traveling at an excessively high speed.

The resulting collision was described as devastating, giving the occupants of the bus little or no chance of survival. The bus driver and his conductor were among those who died instantly in the wreckage.

Taofiq said, “The tragic accident instantly claimed the lives of eight passengers, including the bus driver and his conductor. This unfortunate event has cast a dark shadow over the Badagry axis and plunged the entire community into grief.”

Eight other passengers survived the impact but sustained various degrees of injuries, ranging from moderate to critical.

Emergency response teams—including personnel from the Nigeria Police, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigerian Army—responded swiftly to the scene.

Their timely intervention led to the rescue of the injured victims who were immediately taken to Badagry General Hospital via an FRSC vehicle for urgent medical attention.

“The cause of the accident was identified as excessive speeding by the bus driver, who failed to control the vehicle at a critical moment. The resulting impact was catastrophic,” Taofiq added.

In the wake of the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki visited the crash site to assess the situation firsthand. During his visit, he extended condolences to the bereaved families and expressed heartfelt sympathy to the injured.

“This sorrowful incident is a stark reminder of life’s unpredictability and the grave consequences of reckless driving,” he stated.

He continued, “No journey, no matter how important, should end in such a tragic manner. May the souls of the deceased rest in peace, and may those injured receive full healing.”

Bakare-Oki used the opportunity to issue a stern warning to commercial vehicle drivers and operators of heavy-duty trucks. He emphasized the critical importance of adhering to traffic safety rules, particularly with regard to speed limits.

He also called for regular vehicle maintenance to prevent avoidable accidents and loss of life.

He noted that LASTMA is shifting from traditional traffic control methods toward a more comprehensive and proactive approach to incident management, aimed at preventing accidents before they occur.
