Former National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dr. Ralph Nwosu, has revealed that no fewer than seven prominent political figures are being strongly encouraged by their supporters to contest the 2027 presidential election against incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

This development comes as a new opposition alliance continues to gain traction ahead of the next general election.

Dr. Nwosu made this disclosure during an interview with The Punch, where he also shed light on the evolving structure of the coalition movement.

According to him, several heavyweight politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, are among those being considered by the coalition.

He stated that the ADC, which has now been adopted as the official platform for the opposition coalition, would embrace a transparent and inclusive selection process to determine its 2027 presidential candidate.

“There are currently at least seven leaders being considered within the coalition to take over from Tinubu in 2027. Supporters are pushing different candidates, and everyone has the right to express their preference. That’s the beauty of this new party we are building—diversity and openness,” Nwosu said.

He named some of the key individuals being championed by various groups within the coalition. These include Atiku Abubakar; Peter Obi; former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; former governors Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna) and Rauf Aregbesola (Osun); former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido; and the ADC’s 2023 Oyo State governorship candidate, Dr. Ganiyu Bamidele Ajadi.

“There are people advocating for Aregbesola, others want Ajadi, while some are rooting for Amaechi or Atiku. El-Rufai is also preparing to join the race, and even Sule Lamido is in the picture.

“As someone deeply involved in the coalition’s internal discussions, I can confirm that these interests are real. The old ADC, for instance, may be backing Ajadi. What matters is that the process of choosing our candidate will be fair, transparent, and democratic,” he added.

Commenting on the growing strength of the coalition, Nwosu noted that support for the movement has been expanding rapidly across the country, with massive defections from the established political parties.

He claimed that over 95 percent of members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), 35 percent of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and 80 percent of the Labour Party (LP) are now aligning with the coalition under the ADC umbrella.

“This movement has grown into something far more powerful than any single political party in Nigeria. What we have managed to build in a short time is unprecedented. People from different parties—PDP, APC, Labour—are working together with shared goals.

“The real leadership will emerge from this synergy. This is not just about seizing political power; it’s about rescuing Nigeria from its current crisis and redefining our place on the global stage,” Nwosu said.

He concluded by describing the coalition as a platform for national transformation, promising that its mission goes beyond partisan politics to usher in a new era of governance and progress for Nigeria and Africa.
