The United Kingdom has formally restored diplomatic relations with Syria, marking a significant shift in UK foreign policy eight months after the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s visit to Damascus on Saturday was the first by a British minister to Syria in 14 years.

“After over a decade of conflict, there is renewed hope for the Syrian people,” Lammy said in a statement released by his office. “The UK is re-establishing diplomatic relations because it is in our interests to support the new government to deliver their commitment to build a stable, more secure and prosperous future for all Syrians.”

During his visit, Lammy met with interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani to offer support for the Syrian Arab Republic’s political transition and pledge renewed UK engagement in rebuilding efforts. The UK has contributed £4.5 billion to Syria and the region since 2011.

Lammy also announced a £2 million contribution to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to help eliminate Assad-era chemical weapons stockpiles. Since Assad’s fall, the UK has provided more than £837,000 to support the OPCW’s work in Syria.

The restoration of diplomatic ties comes after the UK lifted sanctions against a dozen Syrian entities, including government departments and media outlets, to help the country rebuild after al-Assad’s fall.

US President Donald Trump also signed an executive order to dismantle a web of sanctions against Syria that had crippled the country’s economy under al-Assad. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani welcomed Trump’s decision, saying it would “open the door of long-awaited reconstruction and development” and “lift the obstacle against economic recovery and open the country to the international community.”

The UK has also unveiled an additional £94.5 million aid package to provide urgent humanitarian assistance, support education and livelihoods, and help neighboring countries hosting Syrian refugees.

Lammy met with Syrian Civil Defence volunteers, known as the White Helmets, and women-led businesses benefiting from UK-funded economic recovery programs. The UK has supported the White Helmets with more than £5 million in the past two years.

The restoration of diplomatic relations between the UK and Syria represents a crucial step towards stability and progress in the region. However, significant challenges remain, including rebuilding a war-torn nation and ensuring inclusive governance. The international community’s continued support and cooperation will be essential in assisting Syria’s recovery.
