Niger State has witnessed a significant political shift following the resignation of Barrister Murtala Mohammed, the State Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

His exit marks the end of a 27-year-long affiliation with the party, sending ripples through the state’s political landscape.
In a resignation letter dated July 4, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman of Nassarawa ‘A’ Ward in Chanchaga Local Government Area, Barr. Mohammed cited “recent disheartening political developments” within the PDP as the principal reason for his departure.
He described his decision as one born out of personal conviction, as well as growing dissatisfaction among his political associates and supporters.
“I have diligently contributed to the growth and progress of the party at different levels,” he stated in the letter, recalling his extensive service to the PDP since its early days. He was a pioneer delegate in 1999, a member of the ward executive committee, and most recently served as the State Legal Adviser.
Although stepping away from the PDP, Barr. Mohammed expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve and affirmed his commitment to the development of Niger State and Nigeria as a whole.
He emphasized that his dedication to democratic ideals remains firm and that he intends to pursue those ideals through alternative political platforms.
To formalize his exit, he also submitted a copy of his resignation letter to the PDP State Chairman and returned his original party membership card—an act symbolizing the finality of his departure.

His resignation is the latest in a series of political realignments within the state, as political parties and stakeholders begin strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Analysts believe that the departure of long-serving members like Barrister Mohammed could be indicative of deeper internal challenges within the PDP, as well as an evolving political terrain in Niger State.
