Tension is mounting across Ondo State following a wave of petitions and mounting public pressure on the state government to initiate a formal investigation into the death of former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

Late Governor Akeredolu passed away on December 27, 2023, in Germany after battling a prolonged illness. Following his demise, then-Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa was sworn in as the substantive governor of the state.

Recently, the state government confirmed that it had received numerous petitions from concerned citizens, professional associations, and groups—particularly from Akeredolu’s hometown, Owo—demanding a coroner’s inquest into the circumstances surrounding the former governor’s death.

Addressing the matter, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, issued a statement acknowledging the influx of petitions. He emphasized that the Coroners Law of Ondo State grants the public the legal right to seek clarity when there is suspicion of foul play or lingering questions about the cause of death.

“We have received petitions from groups both within and outside the state, including professional bodies and citizens of the late governor’s hometown,” Ajulo stated.

“Let me be clear: due process will be followed. The law exists to serve the people and uphold justice. It is not inappropriate for citizens to invoke it when genuine concerns arise. As Attorney General, I am obligated to act in line with the law whenever such matters are raised.”

However, not all stakeholders are in support of this development. Former Minister of State for Transport and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ademola Adegoroye, has cautioned the state government against proceeding with the investigation. In a statement titled “All things are lawful but not all things are expedient”, Adegoroye expressed deep reservations about the move, describing it as potentially divisive.

He revealed that he had been inundated with calls from prominent individuals within and outside the state, expressing concern over what they perceive as a politically motivated attempt to reopen wounds. He warned that the move could trigger unnecessary controversy and unrest.

“I urge the Attorney General to scrutinize the real motives behind these petitions,” Adegoroye advised. “There is a possibility that some individuals aim to portray Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration as vengeful or engaged in a witch-hunt. Let the dead rest. Let the controversy end and let God be the ultimate judge.”

Echoing similar sentiments, a legal practitioner in the state, Mr. Sola Ajisafe, also called on the governor to exercise discernment in handling the matter. In a thoughtful message, he appealed for wisdom and compassion.

“Mr. Governor, as you navigate these turbulent waters, may you be guided by empathy, gratitude, and wisdom,” he stated. “Your legacy will be defined by the decisions you make at this critical moment. I urge you to choose the path that fosters healing and unity rather than conflict.”

As the state grapples with the ethical and political implications of the proposed inquiry, many are watching closely to see whether Governor Aiyedatiwa will authorize a full investigation or prioritize political stability over further scrutiny.
