Sunderland have completed the signing of Senegal international Habib Diarra from French club RC Strasbourg in a club-record £30 million deal, as the Black Cats continue to strengthen their squad ahead of a return to the Premier League.

The 21-year-old midfielder, who impressed with his dynamic displays in Ligue 1 last season, has signed a five-year contract at the Stadium of Light, becoming Sunderland’s second major acquisition of the summer window.

Diarra’s arrival signals Sunderland’s growing ambition following their promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since the 2016/17 season. The transfer eclipses the club’s previous record fee and highlights their intent to compete at the highest level.

The Senegalese international scored against England in a high-profile friendly at the City Ground in June and made 31 appearances for Strasbourg last season, playing a pivotal role in their seventh-place finish in Ligue 1—a result that secured European qualification for only the second time in two decades.

“I’m happy and excited to become a Black Cat and I can’t wait to discover the Stadium of Light and its fans,” said Diarra following the announcement.

“Everyone saw last season’s success and I guarantee that I’ll give everything for this team and fight for these colours in the Premier League. I’m ready for this challenge and I can’t wait to get started.”

Diarra is widely regarded as one of the most promising midfield talents in European football, known for his strength, vision, and ability to drive forward from deep positions. His signing is seen as a direct replacement for Jobe Bellingham, who departed for Borussia Dortmund in June in a deal also worth up to £30 million.

The deal also reflects Sunderland’s growing appeal under manager Régis Le Bris, who has been tasked with building a squad capable of Premier League survival and long-term competitiveness.

Diarra joins fellow midfielder Enzo Le Fée, whose loan from Roma last season has been made permanent after a series of impressive performances in the Championship run-in.

Club sporting director Kristjaan Speakman hailed the signing, calling it a major statement of intent.

“Habib is a top-level talent who fits perfectly into our vision,” Speakman said. “He’s already shown maturity beyond his years at Strasbourg and at international level. We believe he’ll be a key part of our project as we step back into the Premier League.”

Diarra’s addition brings youthful energy and experience at the top level, having competed in France’s top flight and now preparing to test himself against England’s elite.

The Black Cats’ pre-season preparations continue with a tour of the Netherlands later this month, with Diarra expected to join up with his new teammates ahead of their Premier League opener in August.
