The Anambra State Police Command has intensified its efforts to track down the unknown gunmen responsible for the brutal killing of 10 people in Ogboji, located in the Orumba South Local Government Area of the state.
The tragic incident, which occurred in the evening of Sunday, June 30, has sparked outrage and grief across the state. The police have strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a senseless and barbaric act that will not go unpunished.
In an official statement released on Tuesday in Awka, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, provided detailed information regarding the incident and the ongoing investigation.
According to SP Ikenga, the assailants—believed to be armed criminals—arrived at the scene in two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and launched an unprovoked assault on a peaceful gathering. They reportedly opened fire indiscriminately, causing multiple casualties among those present.
“The Police Command in Anambra State strongly condemns the indiscriminate shooting that led to multiple fatalities in Ogboji on the evening of June 30. The Command is committed to tracking down and apprehending the perpetrators to ensure they face the full wrath of the law,” Ikenga stated.
Following the attack, all victims were quickly rushed to a nearby hospital. Sadly, 10 individuals were confirmed dead by medical personnel. Their remains have since been deposited at the hospital mortuary.
Ikenga added that a joint team of security personnel had been swiftly deployed to secure the area and commence investigations. The team has since taken control of the crime scene and is currently gathering intelligence and forensic evidence to aid in identifying and arresting those behind the attack.
The police have appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate by providing any useful information that could assist in the ongoing manhunt. The Command also reassured residents that every necessary measure will be taken to restore peace and prevent further acts of violence in the region.
