The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended two individuals suspected of orchestrating a sophisticated fraud operation involving the illegal diversion and conversion of cement consignments.

The suspects, identified as Mr. Mmaduabuchi Udo and Mr. Abubakar Babangida, were arrested in Abuja on June 23, 2025, by operatives of the Commissioner of Police Monitoring Unit.

According to a statement issued by the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the arrests followed a detailed intelligence-led investigation which uncovered the suspects’ involvement in a criminal syndicate operating across Anambra, Edo, Rivers, and Delta states.

Ikenga explained that preliminary findings revealed the duo had been using various social media platforms to track and profile cement dealers. They allegedly extracted sensitive business information from unsuspecting victims under false pretenses. This data was then used to intercept and divert cement shipments that were originally destined for legitimate business outlets.

“The suspects exploited the openness of social media to deceive their targets and gain access to confidential logistics and supply chain details,” Ikenga stated. “This case highlights the increasing trend of cyber-enabled fraud, particularly against businesses, and serves as a warning to the public to exercise caution when sharing operational information online.”

The police spokesperson further noted that the arrested suspects are currently cooperating with investigators and have made confessional statements that are proving valuable in efforts to locate other accomplices in the criminal network.

He confirmed that once investigations are concluded, the suspects will be formally charged and arraigned in court.

In light of this development, the Commissioner of Police for Anambra State reaffirmed the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and the economic well-being of residents.

He encouraged the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency hotlines.
