A disturbing incident occurred in the Iguomon community, located in Benin, Edo State, where a man alleged to be a pastor and a yet-to-be-identified married woman were publicly humiliated after being caught in an act of adultery.
The pair were reportedly caught in a compromising position, prompting a mob of enraged youths to take matters into their own hands.
According to eyewitnesses, the pastor and the woman had been involved in an illicit affair for some time before they were eventually discovered. Their arrest triggered a dramatic reaction from the community.
A viral video, which surfaced online on Monday, captured the moment the two were dragged out of a house by a group of angry residents. The pastor was stripped completely naked and forced to sit on the bare ground, while the woman was similarly humiliated—taunted, manhandled, and later stripped by a female member of the crowd.
The spectacle drew a large number of onlookers, with many recording the scene on their mobile phones and posting it online, sparking widespread outrage and debate over the appropriateness of the community’s actions.
Reacting to the incident, popular Edo-based activist and convener of the Talakawa Parliament, Marxist Kola Edokpayi, condemned the mob action and described it as a case of jungle justice. He stressed that such actions are dangerous and should not be encouraged in any civilized society.
“We condemn jungle justice in its entirety,” Edokpayi stated. “What the people did in that community cannot be justified. The appropriate thing would have been to report the matter to the police for proper investigation and action.”
He further warned that public humiliation and mob justice can lead to fatal consequences and violate the fundamental rights of individuals, regardless of the allegations against them.
The identities of both individuals remain unconfirmed at the time of this report, and it is unclear whether any arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
