Gonzalo García’s powerful second-half header proved decisive as Real Madrid edged past Juventus to book their place in the quarterfinals of the revamped FIFA Club World Cup, held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

The Spanish giants, who topped Group H, met Group G runners-up Juventus in the round of 16 — their first encounter in seven years. Madrid came into the match unbeaten under new manager Xabi Alonso, while Juventus were reeling from a 5–2 defeat to Manchester City.

The opening 45 minutes were tightly contested, with both sides carving out chances. Kenan Yıldız and Vinícius Júnior tested the opposing defences, but neither could find the finishing touch. Jude Bellingham came closest for Madrid, only to see his effort cleared off the line by Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio.

After the break, Madrid emerged with renewed hope, confidence and intensity. Their pressure paid off in the 54th minute when 21-year-old academy graduate Gonzalo García rose highest to meet Trent Alexander-Arnold’s inch-perfect cross, powering a header beyond Di Gregorio for the game’s only goal.

It was a landmark moment for Alexander-Arnold, who registered his first assist in Real Madrid colours. The former Liverpool full-back — who racked up 92 assists in 354 appearances at Anfield — delivered a trademark whipped ball from the right, which García expertly converted for his third goal of the tournament.

Alonso, deploying a 5-3-2 formation, saw his side ride their luck at times in the first half; looking vulnerable defensively and were fortunate not to fall behind. Juventus threatened through Randal Kolo Muani, who failed to convert a clear opportunity after being played in by Yıldız. Di Gregorio also produced excellent saves to deny Bellingham, Federico Valverde, and Dean Huijsen.

Despite Juventus’ spirited performance, it was García’s moment of quality that ultimately settled the contest.

Main Talking Point

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Real Madrid career is up and running. His pinpoint assist not only underlined his world-class delivery but also offered a glimpse of what Madrid fans can expect going forward. The England international is already showing signs of becoming a key creative force in Alonso’s evolving side. His first goal involvement for the Spanish giants was certainly one to remember.

García, meanwhile, continues to shine on the big stage. With three goals and an assist in four Club World Cup appearances, the Madrid-born striker is quickly becoming a fan favourite and drawing early comparisons to club legend Raúl González.

Standout Performers

Gonzalo García – The 21-year-old striker impressed with his intelligent movement and decisive finishing. His goal was just reward for another mature performance. Michele Di Gregorio – The Juventus goalkeeper was also outstanding, keeping his side in the match with several crucial saves, although he could do nothing to stop García’s bullet header.

Along with Turkey international Arda Guler, Madrid-born striker Garcia is one of the shining lights in Alonso’s new-look side, who head to the quarter-finals with the wind in their sails after recording their third straight win under their new coach.

Underwhelming Performances

Randal Kolo Muani – The France international missed a golden chance to put Juventus ahead early on, lofting the ball over Courtois and onto the roof of the net when he should have scored.

Real Madrid’s narrow but deserved victory sends them into the quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of the final round of 16 clash between Borussia Dortmund and Mexico’s Monterrey this weekend.
