Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and several senior figures of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called for a broad-based opposition coalition to remove the All Progressives Congress (APC) from power in the 2027 general elections.
The call was made at a strategic meeting of PDP stakeholders under the banner of “Concerned Leaders of the PDP,” held on Tuesday at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.
The session was chaired by former Senate President David Mark and attended by influential party members, including former governors Aminu Tambuwal, Liyel Imoke, Babangida Aliyu, Gabriel Suswam, and Sam Egwu. Others present included Prince Uche Secondus, Senator Ben Obi, Senator Austin Akobundu, Kola Ologbondiyan, Josephine Anenih, and Abdullahi Maibasira.
In a communiqué delivered by Senator Mark, the leaders expressed alarm over the declining state of the PDP since the 2023 presidential election and the resignation of former National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu. They warned that internal conflicts and external suppression by the APC had diminished the PDP’s effectiveness as a credible opposition force.
“Our dear party has never been the same,” the communiqué read. “The APC-led government has eroded democratic values, misused state institutions to stifle dissent, and turned governance into a nightmare for ordinary Nigerians.”
They described the APC as a “disaster to our nation,” citing worsening economic hardship, insecurity, a breakdown of governance, and growing international embarrassment. According to the leaders, the ruling party, which rose to power on false promises of change, has failed Nigerians, plunging the country into severe hardship and instability.
Given the gravity of the situation, the PDP leaders urged loyal members and patriotic citizens to unite in a new coalition focused on rescuing the country. They emphasized the need for strategic partnerships with other pro-democracy groups to build a stronger opposition.
“The PDP has the structure, history, and experience to lead the charge, but it must first rebuild and align with like-minded forces,” they noted.
Sources revealed that discussions are ongoing with other parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the newly emerging All Democratic Alliance (ADA), promoted by Dr. Umar Ardo, indicating prospects for a significant political realignment.
Concluding, the leaders declared: “This is a call to action. We must rise together to restore Nigeria’s dignity, defend democracy, and give our people a better future.”
