A heartwarming story of courage and compassion has emerged from Kamba town in Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi State, where a farmer, Kabiru Kamba, rescued a newborn baby girl who had been buried alive in his farmland.

Narrating the shocking discovery, Kamba explained that he had gone to his farm on the morning of Friday, June 27, 2025, when he noticed an unusual mound among the ridges. The irregularity drew his attention, prompting him to stop some passing motorcyclists and ask for their assistance in digging up the area.

“Out of curiosity, I asked the motorcyclists to help dig. As we removed the soil, we uncovered a wrapper buried underneath, which immediately raised my suspicion,” he recounted. “I promptly alerted the police at a nearby checkpoint, who came and dug further. To our amazement and relief, we found a baby girl, still alive, wrapped in a cloth and crying.”

Kamba explained that he was moved by compassion to care for the abandoned child. He said the Dandi Local Government Council officially handed the baby over to him pending the outcome of police investigations.

“It’s purely an act of humanity,” he said. “I didn’t expect anything in return. Coincidentally, my wife had just delivered, so breastfeeding the rescued baby hasn’t been difficult. We’re already planning her naming ceremony for Wednesday. I’ve bought a ram and all necessary items for the occasion. By Allah’s will, we will name her then.”

His wife also expressed her joy in welcoming the baby into their family. “When my husband told me, I was happy and completely at peace with it. I will care for her just as I do for my own child,” she assured.

On Monday, June 30, a delegation from the state’s Technical Working Group (TWG) on Gender-Based Violence visited the couple at their residence to commend their selfless act. The delegation was led by Hajiya Rafa’atu Hammani, a former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.

Speaking during the visit, TWG Secretary, Alhaji Nasiru Idris, stated that the purpose of their visit was to show empathy over the disturbing incident, give thanks to Allah for the baby’s survival, and honor the bravery of the rescuer.

He also reaffirmed the group’s commitment to supporting the family and praised the prompt intervention of the Nigeria Police, who are currently working to track down those responsible for the crime.

As part of their gesture, the TWG team donated several essential supplies for the baby’s welfare, including baby clothes, diapers, detergent, soap, a baby mattress, a bed, powdered milk, and a mosquito net.

Hammani promised that the details of the visit would be conveyed to the wife of the state governor, Hajiya Zainab-Nasare Idris, for further support and necessary interventions.
