The transfer of Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel to Turkish giants Besiktas has encountered a hurdle due to a dispute over performance-related bonuses.
Initially, the deal seemed imminent, with Osayi-Samuel invited to Istanbul for a routine medical examination and contract signing. However, the process stalled when his representatives demanded additional bonuses.
According to reports, Besiktas president Serdal Adalı stated that negotiations were paused due to “unreasonable” demands made by Osayi-Samuel’s father, who represents the player.
The proposed deal included a €1 million signing-on bonus and an annual salary of approximately €2.5 million. Adalı’s comments suggest that Besiktas is willing to revisit the negotiations once a compromise is reached.
Osayi-Samuel’s contract with Fenerbahce is set to expire at the end of the month, and he has declined contract extension offers. The 27-year-old defender joined Fenerbahce from Queens Park Rangers in January 2021 and has made 178 appearances for the Turkish side, scoring seven goals and recording 15 assists.
Meanwhile, Birmingham City has emerged as a potential suitor for Osayi-Samuel, with the club reportedly in advanced discussions to sign the versatile right-sided player.
The development comes after Besiktas and Osayi-Samuel failed to agree on terms. It’s worth noting that Osayi-Samuel had previously agreed to join Besiktas on a free transfer, but the deal now hangs in the balance due to the bonus dispute.
With Osayi-Samuel’s talent and experience, it’s likely that multiple clubs will continue to pursue his signature. His potential move to Besiktas or Birmingham City would be an interesting development in the world of football transfers.
