Tragedy struck in the early hours of Sunday, June 29, 2025, when a 46-year-old Nigerian man lost his life after being hit by a vehicle in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy. The incident occurred at a traffic light on State Road 554, situated between Selargius and Settimo San Pietro.

The victim, whose name had not yet been released to the public at the time of this report, was attempting to cross the road when a BMW struck him.

The vehicle was reportedly driven by a 25-year-old woman who later tested positive for alcohol. She was accompanied by three other young passengers, all said to be residents of Assemini and Cagliari.

Following the accident, emergency response teams—including paramedics from the 118 emergency service, firefighters, and the Carabinieri—were swiftly deployed to the scene. The road was immediately cordoned off to facilitate rescue operations and allow investigators to conduct an on-site examination.

The injured occupants of the BMW were transported to Brotzu Hospital and the Polyclinic in Monserrato for medical evaluation. Fortunately, their injuries were deemed non-life-threatening.

The victim had been a long-term resident of Selargius and was known to have worked in Settimo San Pietro for several years. Authorities were able to identify him with the assistance of the local Nigerian community.

Additional support came from a cousin residing in Tuscany, who helped the Carabinieri—specifically officers from the Quartu Operations Unit and the Selargius station—trace and notify the victim’s brother in Nigeria.

Efforts are now underway to arrange the repatriation of the deceased’s remains to Nigeria. This process is expected to be completed in the coming days, offering the family an opportunity to perform final rites and lay him to rest in his homeland.

The tragic incident has once again underscored the grave consequences of driving under the influence, sparking renewed concerns about road safety and accountability on Italian roads.
