The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismissed allegations that its personnel sealed off the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) located at Wadata Plaza, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.
The controversy emerged earlier today when a faction within the PDP attempted to hold a Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting at the party’s national headquarters. According to reports, the group was reportedly prevented from accessing the premises by a detachment of armed police officers who arrived at the location in the early hours of the morning.
Following the development, the PDP leadership announced a change of venue for the scheduled BoT meeting. In an official statement posted via the party’s verified handle on X (formerly Twitter), the PDP confirmed that the meeting, originally slated for 10 a.m. at the national secretariat, had been moved to the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in the Central Business District of Abuja.
“The meeting of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), earlier scheduled to hold at 10 a.m. at the Party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, has now been moved to the Yar’Adua Centre, Central Business District, Abuja,” the party stated.
The PDP also expressed displeasure over the presence of heavily armed security operatives at its headquarters, accusing the police of disrupting internal party affairs. The party called on all BoT members to proceed to the new venue, urging restraint and calm.
However, in a swift reaction to the accusations, the FCT Police Command issued a statement through its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, denying that the secretariat had been sealed or that access was blocked by its officers.
“The Command wishes to categorically state that this information is false, misleading, and does not reflect the true situation on the ground,” the statement read.
SP Adeh clarified that the presence of police personnel at the PDP headquarters was a proactive measure aimed at ensuring public peace and order, not to obstruct political activities.
“Police officers were only deployed to the venue to maintain law and order and ensure public safety in line with their constitutional mandate. At no time was the Secretariat sealed off by the Police,” she emphasized.
The situation underscores the ongoing tension within the PDP, as internal factions continue to clash over key party decisions, including the conduct of meetings and control of strategic offices.
