Veteran Nollywood actor, Fatai Adekunle Adetayo, popularly known as Lalude, has opened up on the behind-the-scenes reality of his involvement in the 2023 presidential campaign for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, revealing that he and his fellow actors were only paid N10,000 daily for feeding, with no subsequent compensation for their work during the election period.

In a trending interview circulating widely on social media, the Yoruba film actor, known for his mystical roles in Nollywood epics, voiced his disappointment and frustration with how he and others were treated after publicly supporting Tinubu’s presidential ambition.

“They were giving us N10,000 daily for feeding. It was supposed to be more than that for campaign opportunities, but they decided to be giving us N10,000. And when they found out we were saving the money, they reduced the amount and sometimes didn’t give us anything for two to three days,” Lalude lamented.

He revealed that the actors worked tirelessly for over one month and three weeks, expecting a full payment after the campaign, which never came. Now, two years after President Tinubu’s election victory, the promised financial compensation remains unfulfilled.

“After the whole campaign job… they refused to pay us. Those withholding our financial benefits for the campaign will not be fortunate for the rest of their life,” he added in clear frustration.

Lalude’s outcry follows a similar statement made recently by fellow actor Alapini Osa, who also expressed regret over his involvement in the campaign, admitting that he felt misled and disappointed by the outcome.

Their confessions shed light on what appears to be growing dissatisfaction among some Nollywood actors who were mobilized to support the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2023 general elections.

While many public figures endorsed Tinubu, including Saheed Balogun, Toyin Abraham, Bimbo Akintola, Olaiya Igwe, Eniola Badmus, and comedian Seyi Law, the backlash was intense. Several celebrities faced social media backlash, with fans unfollowing them, calling them out for endorsing a party many Nigerians blame for the country’s economic downturn and worsening insecurity.

Despite assurances and enthusiasm shown by celebrities during the campaign season, many like Lalude say they have seen no improvement in their personal or professional lives since the election.

“We put our reputation and time on the line, expecting to be remembered. Now, two years later, we are dealing with rising food prices, poor electricity, and insecurity. It’s painful,” a source close to one of the actors revealed.

In the wake of soaring inflation, fuel subsidy removal, and naira depreciation under the Tinubu-led administration, many Nigerians, including past supporters, have become increasingly vocal about their dissatisfaction.

As the country edges toward the 2027 election cycle, voices like Lalude’s could shape the political discourse. The revelation could discourage other entertainers from aligning with political parties without clear contractual agreements or assurances.

Political analysts believe the discontent among Nollywood stars could signal a larger credibility problem for the APC, especially among urban youth and the entertainment industry that once leaned toward supporting progressive change.

Lalude’s revelation not only highlights the plight of entertainers used during election campaigns but also raises broader questions about political accountability, promises made to campaigners, and the economic frustrations affecting everyday Nigerians. With two years into President Tinubu’s administration and three more to go, the regret voiced by once-loyal supporters like Lalude reflects a shift in public sentiment and a growing call for transparency, justice, and reward for service rendered.
