The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed a fatal armed robbery incident that occurred in the Apo Resettlement area of Abuja, which resulted in one death and three injuries.
The incident took place at about 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, 2025, at Zone E of the Apo Resettlement district.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, explained that police operatives swiftly responded to a distress call from a motorcyclist who reported an ongoing robbery in the area. Upon arrival, officers engaged the armed robbers in a fierce gun duel.
“During the exchange, three individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries. Sadly, one of the victims later died while receiving treatment at the hospital,” Adeh stated. She further revealed that a vehicle belonging to one of the victims was recovered from the crime scene.
Following the incident, a coordinated manhunt involving both police officers and local vigilante groups was launched to apprehend the fleeing suspects. The Command assured the public that every effort is being made to bring the culprits to justice.
In response to a viral video circulating on social media, in which a religious leader claimed during a church service that one of his congregants had identified the attackers as “herdsmen children” and accused the police of abandoning the scene, the Command categorically dismissed the allegations.
“These claims are completely false and highly misleading,” the statement read. “Spreading such unverified information—particularly from respected platforms—can incite fear, erode public trust in law enforcement, and disrupt ongoing security operations.”
The Police Command emphasized the importance of responsible public discourse, urging religious and community leaders to verify sensitive information through official sources before making public declarations.
In the interest of transparency and justice, the Command also called on the religious leader to encourage the mentioned congregant to formally share any helpful information with investigators.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the FCT Police urged residents to remain calm, maintain vigilance, and promptly report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
