He was arraigned before Magistrate Court No. 5 in Gyadi-Gyadi, Kano, on charges of attempting to take his own life.
The Kano State Police Command has formally arraigned a 19-year-old young man, Ibrahim Abubakar, on charges of attempted suicide following a dramatic incident in which he climbed a towering billboard and refused to come down.
The event occurred on Monday near the Gadar Lado area along Maiduguri Road in Kano State. Eyewitnesses reported that Abubakar climbed the structure and remained perched atop for several hours, causing panic and drawing a large crowd of onlookers.
The situation led to significant disruption of vehicular traffic in the area as emergency responders and law enforcement officers worked to resolve the standoff.
In a surprising turn, the teenager insisted that he would not descend from the billboard unless he was granted an audience with a popular TikTok personality, Abdul BK. His demand and prolonged standoff heightened public interest and added a social media twist to the already tense situation.
Following hours of negotiations and safety concerns, Abubakar was eventually rescued and rushed to the Police Hospital in Bompai for urgent medical attention. “The Police in Kano rescued one Ibrahim Abubakar, a 19-year-old of Adamawa State who climbed an advertisement Billboard at Ado Bayero Bridge, threatening to jump down and commit suicide unless he sees a popular Tik-Toker, one Abdul BK.”
Authorities ensured he received proper care and evaluation before proceeding with legal action.
In an update posted to his official Facebook page, the spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, Superintendent Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed that Abubakar had been arraigned on Friday before Magistrate Court No. 5, situated in the Gyadi-Gyadi area of Kano.
“He was arraigned before Magistrate Court No. 5 in Gyadi-Gyadi, Kano, on charges of attempting to take his own life,” SP Kiyawa stated.
The case has sparked conversations about mental health awareness and youth behavior in the digital age, especially as social media influencers continue to play an outsized role in the lives of many young Nigerians.
