Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has responded to the unexpected resignation of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Obi’s reaction comes amid growing reports and speculations surrounding the true reasons behind Ganduje’s sudden departure from the party’s top seat.

Ganduje’s resignation was confirmed by Bashir Ahmad, a former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, who announced on social media: “The National Chairman of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has resigned from his position, effective immediately, as confirmed by multiple sources.”

According to reports, the former Kano State Governor cited health-related concerns as the primary reason for stepping down. His resignation letter reportedly emphasized the need to focus on his personal well-being, acknowledging the physical toll the role has taken on him.

However, while the official statement attributes his exit to medical issues, insiders within the party suggest deeper undercurrents.

Allegations of financial misconduct have circulated in recent months, with some APC members reportedly protesting what they described as “excessive financial demands” emanating from Ganduje’s office.

Political observers also point to increasing internal tensions and factional disputes within the APC, hinting that such unrest may have influenced his decision to vacate the chairmanship.

Reacting to the development, Peter Obi praised Ganduje for making a difficult but necessary choice. In a statement, Obi remarked: “I have just read a news report that the National Chairman of the ruling party, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has resigned from his position with immediate effect, citing health challenges as the reason.

“I must commend Dr. Ganduje for prioritising his health above all else. With his health reportedly in decline, it is both wise and honourable to step aside, knowing that he may no longer be able to render the level of service required by the party, the people, and the nation.

“By this exemplary action, Dr. Ganduje has thrown a challenge to other leaders who, due to health-related issues, are no longer able to deliver optimally. I sincerely hope they take a cue from him.”

Obi further emphasized the importance of capable and energetic leadership, especially in a time when Nigeria is grappling with numerous crises. He stressed that the country can no longer afford leaders who are physically or mentally unfit to meet the demands of their office.

“The challenges confronting our nation today require leaders who are not only competent but also physically and mentally fit, leaders with the capacity and agility to respond decisively and promptly to pressing issues.

“At this critical point and difficult time, we can no longer afford leadership defined by medical tourism, long holidays, or absenteeism caused by age-related ailments. These things are taking a serious toll on our development.”

Concluding his statement, Obi extended his best wishes to Ganduje, saying: “May God Almighty grant Dr. Ganduje a peaceful and fulfilling retirement.”

Ganduje’s resignation has stirred fresh debates about health, transparency, and the fitness of public officeholders in Nigeria’s political sphere, with many now watching to see how the APC navigates the leadership vacuum.
