Pope Leo XIV has expressed deep concern over the erosion of international law and humanitarian principles, warning that the world is sliding into a dangerous era where power is prioritized over justice.

In a social media post, the pontiff lamented the rise of blunt power over international law, saying, “It is disheartening to see today that the strength of international law and humanitarian law no longer seems binding, replaced by the presumed right to overpower others.” He described this trend as “unworthy and shameful for humanity and for the leaders of nations”.

The Pope’s statement comes amid growing calls for an end to the Israeli assault on Gaza, which has resulted in significant human suffering and loss of life. The Israeli military has faced accusations of violating international humanitarian law, including using starvation as a weapon of war.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over possible war crimes in Gaza.

In his remarks, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the need for nations to respect international law and humanitarian principles. He criticized the imposition of the principle of “might makes right” in territories such as Gaza and Ukraine, lamenting the “diabolical intensity” of violent conflicts and rearmament policies. The pontiff urged world leaders to work towards overcoming the causes of conflicts and rejecting false narratives that fuel hatred and revenge.³

As the spiritual leader of approximately 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, Pope Leo XIV has been vocal about the need for a ceasefire in Gaza. In May, he pleaded for an end to the war, saying, “Ceasefire now.

From the Gaza Strip, we hear rising ever more insistently to the heavens, the cries of mothers and fathers who clutch the lifeless bodies of their children, and who are continually forced to move about in search of a little food and water and safer shelter from bombardments.”

The Pope’s condemnation of the disregard for international law highlights the urgent need for global leaders to prioritize diplomacy and peaceful resolution of conflicts. As the situation in Gaza and other conflict zones continues to deteriorate, the international community must work together to uphold humanitarian law and protect human rights.
