The Governor urged everyone in the state to take the opportunity to offer prayers for the peace, progress, and prosperity of both Oyo State and Nigeria at large.

Oyo State has declared Friday, June 27, 2025, as a public holiday in commemoration of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1447 AH.

The declaration was made by Governor Seyi Makinde to allow Muslim faithful and all residents to observe and reflect on the significance of the new Islamic calendar year.

This announcement was conveyed in an official circular issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Olanike K. Adeyemo.

According to the statement, the Governor urged everyone in the state to take the opportunity to offer prayers for the peace, progress, and prosperity of both Oyo State and Nigeria at large.

The Islamic New Year, which begins with the month of Muharram, marks a monumental event in Islamic history—the migration (Hijrah) of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. This migration signifies the establishment of the first Islamic community and the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar.

Hijrah 1447 AH is not only a time for historical reflection but also a period for renewed spiritual commitment. Muslims across the world observe this time with prayers, fasting, and community engagement. Of special importance is the 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, which commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, and serves as a symbol of sacrifice, justice, and devotion.

The observance of the Hijrah reminds Muslims of the virtues of perseverance, faith, and the importance of standing firm in the face of adversity. It also reinforces the value of communal support and resilience through trying times.

Governor Makinde’s declaration of a work-free day not only honors Islamic tradition but also demonstrates the administration’s commitment to inclusivity, religious harmony, and cultural respect in Oyo State.
