The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken a significant step toward fulfilling a decades-old promise to the 1994 Super Eagles, who brought glory to the nation by winning the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
On Wednesday, Efan Ekoku, a key striker in the victorious squad, was presented with the allocation letter for his house in Abuja, marking another milestone in honoring the team’s historic achievement.
The ceremony, held at the Ministry of Housing, saw Ekoku represented by his niece, Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun, who received the allocation letter on his behalf.
The presentation was conducted by QS Pemi Temitope, Director and Head of the Public Building and Housing Development Department, acting on behalf of the Honourable Minister of Housing.
Temitope emphasized the government’s commitment to rewarding the 1994 Super Eagles for their patriotic service, which elevated Nigeria’s standing in African football. “This gesture reflects the government’s dedication to fulfilling its promises and honoring those who have brought pride to our nation,” Temitope stated.
In her remarks, Nwagbogun expressed profound gratitude to the Federal Government and the Ministry of Housing for their integrity in delivering on the pledge. “I am deeply grateful for this gesture, which not only honors my uncle’s contributions but also restores faith in the value of public promises,” she said. “This is a heartwarming moment for our family and a testament to the government’s commitment to its word.”
The allocation of houses to the 1994 Super Eagles fulfills a promise made by the administration of General Sani Abacha following the team’s triumph in Tunisia. In 2022, former President Muhammadu Buhari approved the distribution of housing units to the team members, addressing a commitment that had remained unfulfilled for 28 years.
The allocations have been made across various states, with some players receiving their houses in their home states, while others, like Ekoku, were allocated properties in Abuja.
This development underscores the government’s efforts to recognize the contributions of the 1994 Super Eagles, whose victory remains a cherished moment in Nigeria’s sporting history.
