A severe heatwave has swept across eastern North America, bringing with it temperatures that have soared to record highs and causing dozens of people to be hospitalized for heat-related illnesses.

More than 150 people fell ill at an outdoor school graduation ceremony in Paterson, New Jersey, prompting the city’s mayor to declare a state of emergency.

The heatwave, which is expected to impact over 160 million people through the week, has led to heat warnings being issued from the US Midwest to the East Coast, as well as in parts of Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia in Canada.

In Washington DC, six people needed hospital treatment during a concert by South Korean band ‘Stray Kids’, while in North Carolina, at least 41 people, including children, were hospitalized for heat-related injuries.

Experts warn that the soaring temperatures throughout parts of North America could aggravate the risk of heat-related illness, especially due to high humidity levels. “The heatwave arrives less than a week after the official start of summer,” said Sarah Keith-Lucas, Lead Weather Presenter. “Forecasters say several places may experience record highs, with the Mid-Atlantic region expected to face the most intense conditions by Thursday.”

The US National Weather Service (NWS) has advised people to “take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke”. People are being told to stay out of the sun during the hottest times of day, drink plenty of water, and to check on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.

As the heatwave continues, energy companies on the east coast have appealed to customers to conserve power, due to fears of blackouts, as millions crank up their air conditioning units to high. In New York, highs on Tuesday may reach 101F (38C), which would equal the highest June temperature ever recorded in the city, dating back to 1966.

The heatwave is a reminder of the importance of taking precautions during periods of extreme heat. As the NWS notes, heat-related illnesses can be serious and even life-threatening, especially for vulnerable populations. By taking simple steps, such as staying hydrated and staying out of the sun, people can reduce their risk of heat-related illness and stay safe during the heatwave.
